-EXTERNAL antennas have a weatherproof housing already.

* GPS Antennas may be ACTIVE or PASSIVE:
-ACTIVE antennas contain a preamplifier to improve the signal/noise ratio. The power for this pre-amp is usually sent over the RF signal cable. 
-PASSIVE antennas have no pre-amplifier.
* GPS Antennas may be combined with other antennas in a single housing.  A common combination is, for example, GPS plus GSM.

External GPS Antennas EXTERNAL antennas have a weatherproof housing.
